Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated about 190 kms from Kochi on the banks
of the Periyar lake - an artificial lake, at Thekkady. Here the high ranges
of the Western Ghats are clothed in dense evergreen, moist deciduous forests

tigers, gaurs, lion
tailed macaques and Nilgiri langurs can be
seen.In addition to elephant rides, cruises on the lake and treks to the Mangala
Devi temple - a beautiful old stone temple situated in the heart of the
Thekkady forest, this sanctuary offers the unique opportunity to watch wild
elephants at close quarters.
The Periyar Widlife sanctuary is spread across 777 sq km, of which 360 sq km
is thick evergreen forest. The Periyar Wiild Life Sanctuary was declared a
Tiger Reserve in 1978. The splendid artificial lake formed by the
Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park.
Noted for its geomorphology, diversity of wildlife and scenic beauty, the
Reserve attracts visitors all over the world.

Alleppey
Alleppey's allure is the backwaters. Alleppey is one of the most important
tourist centers in the state, with a large network of inland canals. These
large network of canals provide Alleppey its lifeline. Alleppey was one of
the busiest centers of trade in the past with one of the best known ports
along the Malabar coast. |
Even today it retains its charm as the centre for Coir carpet industries and
prawn farming.
Alleppey is also known for its spectacular snake - boat races held on the
second Saturday of August, every year. . It is quite a fascinating sight, as
snake - boats, each manned by over a hundred oarsmen, cut through the waters
like wind. The event is a tremendous success with tourists and the local
population alike.
Alleppey is also home to Kuttanad, The rice bowl of kerala, one of the very
few places in the world where farming is done below sea level. Kuttanad is a
land of lush paddy fields and stretches for 75 Km sandwiched between the sea
and the hills.

Kumarakam
Kumarakam about an hours ride from Kochi is a vibrant lush green peninsula
jutting into the ever-effervescent Vembanad Lakes. |

The bird sanctuary here, which is spread across 14 acres is a favorite haunt
of migratory birds.
An enchanting backwater destination, Kumarakom offers visitors many other
leisure options. Boating and fishing facilities are available at Kumarakom.

Kumarakom is an unbelievably beautiful paradise of mangrove forests, emerald
green paddy fields and coconut groves interspersed with enchanting waterways
and canals adorned with while lillies.

Kodungaloor
About 25 kms away from Ernakulam is the old town of Kodungaloor. This town
is identified with the mythical Muziris, the trade hub during the pre
colonial days. It was the seat of the kings of Kochi. Kodungaloor had a
jewish settlement long back.
One of the oldest mosques in South India is
also situated en route to Kodungaloor. It is called the cheraman juma masjid.
